DMT occurs naturally in many species of plants, usually together with 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenine. Plants containing DMT are commonly used by South American Indian tribes. Dimethyltryptamine is usually the main ingredient in the drink ayahuasca. DMT is the major alkaloid of many plants, including Mimosa hostilis, Diplopterys cabrerana, and Psychotria viridis. DMT is also a minor alkaloid in snuff made from the bark of Virola, the major alkaloid of which is 5-MeO-DMT. It also occurs in the plants Anadenanthera peregrina and Anadenanthera colubrina, from which Yopo and Vilca snuffs are obtained, in which the main alkaloid is bufotenine.
Orally administered dimethyltryptamine is inactive unless taken together with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOi) such as harmaline. Without MAOI, the body metabolizes DMT quickly and the psychoactive effect does not occur. Other routes of administration (injection or intranasal) produce a full psychedelic and entheogenic effect, which lasts for a short time

Psychoactive properties
The first studies on the psychoactive effects of dimethyltryptamine were conducted by Stephen Szára in the 1950s, on a group of volunteers, including William S. Burroughs. Szára, who worked for the National Institutes of Health, took up DMT as a subject for his research after his LSD order from the Swiss pharmaceutical company Sandoz was revoked over concerns about sending a powerful psychoactive substance that could be used as a weapon behind the Iron Curtain.
Dimethyltryptamine is a powerful psychoactive substance. Smoked, injected, snorted, or taken orally with MAOIs, it produces a powerful entheogenic experience that includes distinct perceptual changes, euphoria, intense visual effects, and hallucinations that may be real.
DMT’s effects can include time distortion, visual and auditory hallucinations, erotic experiences, and a variety of other individual experiences that are difficult or impossible to express in words. Professor Alan Watts described DMT’s effects this way: “Load the universe into a cannon. Aim for the brain. Shoot.”
From 1990 to 1995, psychiatrist Rick Strassman conducted research on DMT at the University of New Mexico. Twenty percent of volunteers who received high doses of DMT by injection reported sensory contact with extraterrestrials.
